• Modern Definition (Hemorrhoids): Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your lower rectum and anus, similar to varicose veins. They develop due to increased pressure in the lower rectum, causing the vascular cushions to enlarge, bleed, or prolapse (come out).
• Ayurvedic Definition (Arsha): In Ayurveda, Piles is known as "Arsha." The texts define it as a disease that tortures the patient like an enemy (Ari). It is characterized by the formation of fleshy sprouts (Mamsankura) in the anal canal, obstructing the passage of stool.

Know Your Severity: The 4 Stages of Piles

Understanding the grade of your condition is crucial for determining the right course of treatment.

• Grade 1 (Early Stage): The pile mass remains inside the anal canal. It often causes bleeding but cannot be seen or felt from the outside.
• Grade 2 (Mild Prolapse): The pile mass comes out during bowel movements but goes back inside automatically on its own.
• Grade 3 (Advanced Prolapse): The mass comes out during defecation but does not go back in on its own; it requires manual pushing to return inside.
• Grade 4 (Severe/Permanent Prolapse): The pile mass remains outside the anus permanently and cannot be pushed back in. This stage is often painful and prone to infection.

• Dosha Prakopa: These toxins aggravate Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth/water) Doshas.
• Sthana Samshraya: The aggravated Doshas travel down and lodge in the Gudavali (anal region).
• Dhatu Dushti: They contaminate the Mamsa (muscle) and Meda (fat) Dhatus, leading to the formation of pile masses (Arsha).
